Woodward Canyon Washington State Chardonnay
Woodward Canyon Winery was instrumental in establishing the reputation of Walla Walla wine. Founded in 1981 by Rick Small and Darcey Fugman-Small, the winery is well known for producing category defining premium wines. In addition to grapes harvested from their 16.5 ha home vineyard, the family purchases grapes from Champoux, Sagemoor, Celilo, and Weinbau vineyards. Today Rick and Darceys children, Jordan and Sager, have taken on larger roles as their parents step back from their responsibilities. Their own vines have been certified Salmon Safe, and the farming practices are taking on more and more aspects of organic and biodynamic principles.
Inspired by the Grand Crus of Burgundy, this Chardonnay was made from grapes harvested from Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard and Celilo Vineyard. The wine was barrel fermented in 100% French Sirugue oak (20% new).
In the words of the winery – Our Washington State Chardonnay is light straw in color and brilliantly clear. Beautiful vibrant aromas of peach, melon, and light starfruit notes marry perfectly with the beautifully understated oak creating a subtle spice and vanilla. Whole cluster pressing gives delineated fruit flavors. The texture and weight create a very nice mouthfeel and leave ripe fruit flavors of nectarine, peach, and apple. The crisp acidity is balanced with the fruit creating good proportion.
